How it works

  1. Pick an SGO

Find one on a participating state's list, by school, name or state.

  2. Give on its website

Tell the SGO the gift is for the federal tax credit.

  3. Claim the credit

It comes off the federal income tax you owe, dollar for dollar.

  4. A student gets a scholarship

SGOs must spend at least 90% of what they take in on scholarships.

Why a tax credit beats a deduction

A normal charity deduction

You save part of your gift

It lowers the income your tax is figured on, so you get back only a slice of what you gave.

This federal tax credit

You save all of it, up to $1,700

It lowers the tax you owe itself, dollar for dollar.

Find an SGO to give to

Notes and sources

1. The federal credit is up to $1,700 per taxpayer per year, for gifts made on or after Jan 1, 2027. It lowers the federal income tax you owe dollar for dollar, so the gift costs nothing if you owe at least that much tax. Unused credit carries forward up to 5 years. A state tax credit for the same gift lowers the federal one, and the gift can't also be deducted. Not tax advice.

Ask a tax professional how the credit applies to you. Order and badges follow the published Methodology. No SGO can pay for placement, and being listed is not an endorsement.
